Wayfinding and Signage System for University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia

Given the immaculate history of the institution and, also, given all the architectural maintenance commitments required by UNESCO, this project should still comply with the graphic standards manuals, not only in physical but also digital or three-dimensional media of the institution. There would have to be a concern and respect for the place as well as an incessant search for solutions that would adapt harmoniously with the pre-existing ones.

First, and to simplify the perception, memorization and ease of representation, we created a set of 9 pictograms of the buildings to be integrated into the system. These designs were represented in a single line, allowing adaptability to any surface or material in the form of serigraphic applications, printed or bas-relief engravings. On the other hand, these designs avoid the need to add any chromatic code, to give it greater resistance to the times and fashions.

5 families of signage pieces were created: direction; guidance; identification; central directory; digital signage.

As for the Direction signs, the lighting poles that were already part of the classified set were used and that, due to their quantity and placement, are the ideal support for the desired information to be represented.

As for Orientation, a set of floor tiles was designed, with an orientation system through the pictographic representation of the buildings associated with the cardinal points, strategically taking advantage of some of the pre-existing spaces occupied in the design of the Portuguese sidewalk by wind-roses.

Then, for identification signs, there were 4 key points: Escolas do Estado Novo, Portas de Minerva, Colégio de Jesus and Paço das Escolas. At all these points, pieces were created that, in addition to identifying the place, contained information about each of the locations, varying and adapting the type of material, always respecting the set of existing elements.

Then, for the signage of the Central Directory, given a large number of visitors, we considered it essential to mark Praça D.Dinis with a piece that significantly marks the space where they have just entered and that helps passersby to have a clear idea of the territory where meet. In this way, we created a general directory of the space with the graphic representation of the map of the territory, where the main points of interest to visit are marked. At the same time, it will serve to welcome all visitors.

Finally, regarding Digital signage, we consider that the use of new technologies is inevitable in the near future, not only for the simplification of the circulation process and identification of destination points but also for the image of modernity and the ability to evolve and adapt to the current times.

For this purpose, we suggest the use of interactive kiosks placed in strategic locations. In addition to viewing the directions themselves on the screen, the kiosk can print on paper or send directions, maps and coordinates to mobile devices.
